Bowel Care

This in-depth course looks at the very important anatomy and physiology of the bowel. It covers infection prevention and control as well as the provision of bowel care interventions including the use of micro enemas. Most importantly, we also cover proper hydration and nutrition for client outcomes and best practices of self-care for our clients.  

 Some of the competencies achieved during class are:
  • NDIS Code of Conduct, Practice Standards and High Intensity Skill Descriptors
  • Develop knowledge of the gastrointestinal system anatomy and physiology including the mouth, swallowing, oesophagus, gastric centre, small intestine, colon, rectum and the anus
  • Understand basic dysfunction of the bowel
  • Medications for bowel dysfunction
  • Develop an understanding of how to assist clients with everyday nutrition, hydration and activity to promote healthy bowel function
  • Acquire knowledge and develop skills in the administration of bowel medication
  • Identify when issues may occur with bowel care
  • Infection prevention and control
  • Identify various methods of investigations for bowel dysfunctions including Colonoscopy, Endoscopy, Gut Transit Studies, Barium Meal, Barium Enema and Proctoscopy
  • The role of infection prevention and control including hand hygiene and the use of appropriate PPE 
  • Scope of Practice, Competency and Escalation Protocols
This program has one practical:
  • Insertion of a micro-enema
