Indwelling Urinary Catheter Care

During this session, we investigate the anatomy and physiology of the bladder and why we use catheters. We go through vital care of equipment instructions and also how to translate this to our clients at home. We also look at essential equipment needed to perform and go through general well-being including good bladder health and UTIs.  
A great course for registered nurses and support workers.  

Some of the competencies achieved during class are:
  • Having a basic knowledge of bladder anatomy and physiology as it relates to an indwelling urinary catheter
  • Understanding the different types of catheters 
  • Nutrition and hydration needs as they support use of an indwelling urinary catheter 
  • Having a working knowledge about management of drainage devices
  • Developing an understanding of the risks associated
  • Recognising the relationship between bowel health and catheters 
  • Recognising the relationship between adequate hydration and catheters
  • Recognising Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) and other complications 

 There is one practical for this session:
  • Connecting and disconnecting the leg bag
