Assist with Medication and Midazolam

Midazolam is the main medication used to manage seizure activity. In this course, we go through how to understand the medication itself, when and how to administer it, as well as the link to seizure management
We cover the basics of medication and side effects, understand the risks and responsibilities of administering medications and the role of a support worker during a seizure.

Some of the competencies achieved during class are:
  • NDIS Code of Conduct, Practice Standards and High Intensity Skill Descriptors
  • Understanding the regulation of medications in South Australia and the role of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
  • Restricted medications and the requirements under legislation
  • Developing an understanding of how medications affect the body
  • Legislation, policy and procedure as they relate to support work
  • Having practical knowledge of the different formulations and routes
  • Having a basic knowledge of key medication effects and side-effects
  • The alteration of medications based on manufacturing guidelines and the Medication Authority
  • The role of consent in the administration of medication
  • The difference between self-administration, prompting and administration of medication based on legislation and organisational policy
  • Developing an understanding of the risks and responsibilities relating to medication administration
  • Expiry dates and the disposal of medication
  • Knowing how to use the Rights of Medication
  • Understanding the role and importance of documentation and record-keeping including incident observation and reporting 
  • Recognising the symptoms of a seizure
  • Recognise concerns that may arise with a person during the seizure and recovery phase
  • Developing expertise in how to administer emergency medications during a seizure
  • Developing a basic knowledge of the effects and side-effects of midazolam
There are three practical's for this session:
  • Checking medication from the Dose Administration Aid against the Medication Authority based on the Rights of Medication
  • Pouring liquid to 10mls
  • Administering Basic First Aid including the use of Midazolam
