Safe Environments: Through their Eyes

This training has been developed by the Department of Human Services Child Safe Environments team to assist organisations that are providing services to children and young people.

It will support staff to recognise, report and respond to children or young people who may be at risk of harm and build their capacity to provide safe environments within the organisation. Organisations should consider requiring staff and volunteers working with children and young people to attend a Safe environments training course. 

This course is available as a full-day or 3-hour refresher. It will support individuals to understand their obligations under the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 to provide child-safe environments within their role in working with or alongside children.

The competencies achieved for this course include: 
  • Developing an understanding of the current legislation that umbrellas children in South Australia 
  • The role of mandated reporting 
  • Developing an understanding of how support workers are required to act and report under this legislation  
  • Understanding how to adopt a child focus over an adult focus 
  • Understanding the role of reporting mechanisms including where, when and how to report 
  • Understanding compliance issues 
  • Following a Case Study 
  • Understand support workers' scope of practice 
  • Understanding the role and importance of documentation and record-keeping  
Length of Course: Refresh (Approx. 3hr) or Full-day (Approx. 7hr)
