About Course
Enteral Feeding highlights the focal questions associated with the topic, including, why and how enteral feeding is performed. Through practical training, students learn the structure of enteral feeding tubes, pumps and how to care for respective equipment. Students also examine feeding methods, client experience, swallowing disorders, infection prevention and control, as well as, the strengths and risks associated with a gastronomy tube and troubleshooting.

Develop knowledge of the gastrointestinal system anatomy and physiology including the mouth, swallowing, oesophagus, gastric center, small intestine, colon, rectum and the anus
Have an understanding of the physiology of swallowing including the phases of eating and swallowing and associated risks
Develop knowledge of dysphagia including the warning signs and consequences of swallowing disorders
Defining the principles and reasoning of enteral feeding
Understanding the benefits and risks associated with a gastrostomy tube and tract
Troubleshooting
Contraindications
Recognising the care priorities associated with gastrostomy care and enteral feeding protocols including medication administration, bowel and oral health
Successfully demonstrate the correct practical elements for enteral feeding protocols
The role of infection prevention and control including hand hygiene, the use of appropriate PPE and cleaning of equipment

Preparing and connecting a personal feed line
Connecting the personal feed line to the barrel of the syringe
Administering water flush and feed as per Support Plan
Students must complete all practicals to pass the course.
