Elements:

1. Identify manual tasks involving risk

• 1.1 Recognise manual tasks that may involve risk to self or others.

• 1.2 Identify risk factors that make the manual task hazardous.

• 1.3 Determine the nature and extent of the risk.

• 1.4 Follow organisation procedures for controlling hazardous manual tasks.

2. Prepare for manual tasks

• 2.1 Prepare workplace layout and environment according to organisation procedures.

• 2.2 Organise task and workflow appropriately.

• 2.3 Prepare and package loads for movement, taking account of specific requirements for different materials and organisation procedures.

• 2.4 Select and use personal protective equipment appropriate to the task.

• 2.5 Ensure task is within personal capabilities.

3. Complete manual tasks

• 3.1 Use appropriate posture and handling techniques to reduce muscle load on exertion.

• 3.2 Select, adjust and use mechanical aids and handling devices according to manufacturers instructions.

• 3.3 Pace and schedule tasks according to procedures.

4. Contribute to safe work practices

• 4.1 Identify hazardous manual tasks and report to supervisor according to organisation procedures.

• 4.2 Follow organisation procedures for reporting symptoms of injury or actual injury to self and others.

• 4.3 Participate in workplace safety activities and contribute to the improvement of manual tasks.

• 4.4 Contribute to risk management approach to reduce risks from manual tasks.

Prior to attending class, you will need to complete the pre-course quiz and download and read the Student Learning and Assessment Guide. The directions will be sent to you via email upon enrolment.

Please bring a printed and completed copy of the pre-course quiz to class.

Non-completion of the pre-course quiz will result in a non-pass.

These two activities are expected to take 8 hours to complete.

In class, theory and practical will take 7 hours.

Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials.

A statement of attainment will only be issued to people undertaking this course who will successfully complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

A practical component of the course is to complete certain physical tasks associated with proper manual handling techniques. You will need to be physically fit and able to complete these tasks and gain certification. If you are unsure, please contact us prior to booking in your class.

To successfully complete this course, students will require the basic language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills to complete the training and its assessments:

• Learning: Absorb detailed information, remain calm, and make informed decisions to manage a critical situation until emergency services arrives.

• Reading: Read, acknowledge and understand detailed first aid guides, labels, or emergency instructions in a tense situation.

• Writing: Clearly document the situation accurately including steps taken during the first aid process.

• Oral communication: Explain what’s happening and pass on important information to emergency services or others assisting you.

• Numeracy: Use number format to monitor time, check patient’s vital signs such as breathing or pulse, and track how that person is responding.

• Digital Ability: The ability to use a mobile phone or similar device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete necessary online forms or access learning materials.
