The Importance of Workplace First Aid and CPR Training

Whether you work in an office, warehouse, restaurant, construction site or healthcare facility, emergencies can happen at any time.

Workplace first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training is more than just a compliance measure; it’s a moral obligation. A slip, fall or sudden medical emergency can occur without warning, and if it does, having staff who are trained and confident to perform first aid and CPR procedures can make all the difference.

In this article, we will discuss what is required to stay compliant with workplace first aid and CPR Australian laws, ways of improving employee confidence and safety, as well as, the types of first aid and CPR courses to get certified.

Workplace First Aid and CPR Legal Compliance

Governed by Safe Work Australia, businesses must adhere to the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) laws, which ensure the safety of any individual(s) that spends time in that workplace.

As outlined by Safe Work Australia, the first aid officer rule includes:

  • Low-risk workplaces, e.g., office: 1 first aid officer per 50 employees

  • High-risk workplaces, e.g., construction site: 1 first aid officer per 25 employees

  • Remote high-risk workplaces, e.g., mining: 1 first aid officer per 10 employees

What is a first aid officer?

A first aid officer is a trained staff member who is qualified to give a first aid and CPR response to someone in an emergency situation.

A first aid officer must hold a nationally recognised first aid (HLTAID011 Provide First Aid) and CPR (HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certificate. As per the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines, a first aid certificate should be updated every three years, whereas, a CPR certificate should be updated every year.

In addition, a first aid officer is encouraged to continuously practice and refresh their first aid and CPR skills and knowledge, so that they are better prepared for when an emergency arises.

Please note, these regulations may vary per state, so it is important to check this on their official website. You can find your state below:

Improving Employee Confidence and Safety

When employees know that their workplace has procedures in place to handle an emergency, it is likely that they will feel a greater sense of confidence and security.

First aid and CPR training not only boosts confidence and security; it creates a culture of care and safety within an organisation.

It is more likely for employees to feel cared for and valued when they see their employer has put procedures and resources in place to look out for the well-being of their staff.

Additionally, workplace first aid officers can help to prevent panic and confusion that often comes with being involved in an emergency situation. This reinforces a calmer and more focused working environment.
